On January 20th, 2021, Fred Hobbs, Cara Sheridan, and Scott Wendelberger presented to the Chinook West students via Zoom. In the past, the team would often drive out to this school and present in person. Luckily they were still able to give their presentation with the use of modern technology. Despite some connection problems, the presentation went rather smoothly! In some cases, it might have been easier!
The presentation focused on topics geared towards younger folks and involved the explanation of barriers, proper disability etiquette, and a fun quiz about innovations that help create opportunities for people with disabilities. They also made sure to mention the importance of ridding our modern vocabularies of the "r-word," to help promote greater inclusion and respect of folks with disabilities. One interesting change from the in-person presentations to the Zoom call was the addition of the quiz. After long deliberations, the team decided the best way to increase interaction and have a little fun was to include a quiz, but instead of shouting out the answers, the students were encouraged to use American Sign Language (ASL). If they wished to answer the quiz question with A, they would simply hold up the letter A in ASL as seen in the photo below.
The pandemic has forced Imagine! to adapt greatly, but these adaptions have not put a stop to all of the fun and exciting things that happen often here. While services, events, and presentations look different than they had before, they still maintain the same vigor and enthusiasm that was found before the pandemic. We all hope to be rid of this virus soon, but for now we are grateful to continue doing what we do best, creating a world of opportunity for all abilities.
