Imagine! was established on August 6th, 1963 by a group of parents determined to see that their children with developmental disabilities had the opportunity to participate in their community. Since then, this organization has grown to serve over 4,200 people in Boulder and Broomfield counties. Imagine! has been at the frontline of serving folks with disabilities since its inception in 1963 and has had a major hand in using innovative means to continue to create a world of opportunity.
As we look back on our 57 years, we remember the events that shaped us as an organization, including the de-institutionalization movement in the 80’s, the American Disabilities Act in 1990, the End the Wait campaign in 2019, and COVID-19 in 2020. We’ve seen a great deal of change happen in Colorado and the United States as a whole, and we are proud to help facilitate that change for the betterment of people with I/DD.
In this year alone, we’ve had to implement changes to our programs to help keep the people we serve safe. We’ve embraced technology and new ideas from staff to help us adapt to these many changes, and it has allowed us to not only continue services but introduce new and exciting programs for our clients.
While 57 years would make one think Imagine! is old and wise, we would be the first to say that we are just getting started. The world changes rapidly day by day and Imagine! is no stranger to adjusting to flow with that change. So while we are beyond thankful to have been a part of this community for so long, we are excited to see what the future has in store.
