About Us

Imagine! is a nonprofit organization that provides supports and services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, of all ages, living in Boulder and Broomfield counties. Imagine!’s Summer Camp is just one example of the multi-faceted service delivery Imagine! provides year round.

In 2021, Imagine! served over 4,290 individuals and their families, tailoring our service options to their needs and interests. Services include: educational and therapeutic services, job training and placement, recreation and leisure activities, residential options, behavioral and mental health services, interventions for babies and toddlers, technology solutions, and support for families. Imagine! School Age Services is part of one big family!

Your Role

Imagine! Summer Camp is a great place for anyone to work, no matter your experience or education in this field. As long as you have a passion for helping others and the attention to detail for maintaining safety and protocol, the rest comes naturally, and you have an incredible team to support you at anytime. Key expectations and job duties that you will carry out as a Summer Camp Counselor includes (but not limited to):

  • Support participants with accessing the community and achieving their goals as outlined in their Individualized Plans.
  • Implement lesson plans and schedules as outlined by the Imagine! CTRS (Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist) Team, and use the principles of Therapeutic Recreation while engaging with each participant the entire shift.
  • Be the go-to support system for your assigned participant(s) and ensure their safe and meaningful participation in that day’s events. (Assignments change from day to day, allowing you to get to know and work with a variety of our awesome participants!)
  • Bring high energy and enthusiam to each activity, allowing participants to get excited and to approach each activity with confidence and poise.
  • As appropriate, implement your creativity, skills, and experiences during certain activities to help enrich the activity for all.
  • Read and understand your participants’ Individual Plans as well as the day’s activity plan before each shift.
  • Be adaptable and ready for changes throughout the day. Engage in clear communication with co-workers and leadership while navigating necessary changes in the day.
  • Share driving responsibilities with co-workers throughout the day, using a car/van from Imagine!’s vehicle fleet.

Supportive Environment

The backbone of our services are the creative, compassionate, and dedicated Imagine! Counselors who deliver high quality service and instruction to our campers on a consistent basis. Recognizing this, our leadership team works hard to ensure that all administrative decisions are made with our direct care staff in mind, fostering a positive team culture that includes anyone and everyone who takes part in our mission. Supporting our participants/ clients the best we can means supporting our employees the best we can.

There will be 2-3 veteran leaders during each shift who will guide everyone through they day’s schedule and provide assistance where needed. Our leadership team also consists of three Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRS) who work collaboratively with all Counselors to ensure that you are comfortable in your role and have what you need. The CTRS’s write the daily schedules and lesson plans with a focus on Therapeutic Recreation and positive instruction, creating a successfull environment for all abilities.

Imagine!’s Summer Camp is designed to cultivate a community atmosphere that benefits from everyone’s participation. Aside from attending to personal needs and driving from one location to the next, you and your assigned participant(s) will engage in each lesson plan alongside all the other participants and their Counselors and the leadership team.

Therapeutic Recreation

Therapeutic Recreation (TR) is an allied health profession which focuses on improving a person’s quality of life in the following five domains: physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and spiritual, with an emphasis on leisure needs through activity interventions.

Imagine! uses community based Therapeutic Recreation in all of our School Age Services, using the community as our classroom and teaching daily living skills and independence using real life scenarios. Imagine!’s team of Recreation Therapists (CTRS) help ensure that the principles of TR are infused into each lesson plan and, ultimately, the fabric of what we do:

  • We promote and support community inclusion.
  • We provide opportunities for learning and growth.
  • We offer individualized learning opportunities through meaningful and challenging activities and classes.
  • We promote participants health, safety, and well-being.
  • We emphasize strengths, abilities, and positive individual choices.
  • We provide services that benefit participants and their families.

Unmatched Experience

Imagine! Summer Camp can be a great place for students who are pursuing a career path in similar fields, including, but not limited to: social work, behavioral sciences, speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, and therapeutic recreation. You will receive invaluable hands-on experience and learn how Imagine! operates as a healthcare provider for its community.

We sat down with former Imagine! employee Matt Mock and Beth Langer, PhD, CCC-SLP, to discuss how working at Imagine! Summer Camp is an experience you can’t get anywhere else.

Matt Mock is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Denver, and provides specialized treatment to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Before pursuing a Master’s degree in Social Work at CU Denver, Matt worked at Imagine! for 6.5 years, providing direct care and instruction in Imagine!’s School Age and Community Services.

Beth Langer is a speech-language pathologist and has focused her studies on assessment and intervention for children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Beth also teaches at CU Boulder in the Speech, Language, and Hearing Science department.

Oh, the places we will go!
