Medication Administration - Full Certification
This class is taught on two consecutive days. Participants can complete all state requirements associated with the Medication Administration Course including all content, the written test, and the practicum. Each student who performs according to requirements will be given a certificate of completion and will be registered with DDD. A Medication Administration Refresher should be taken annually thereafter. This certification is only valid for services in the Colorado Developmental Disabilities system.
Medication Administration Refresher (NetLearning online course $10)
Offered only as an online course. This course is for those needing to renew their Medication Administration certification. This course should be taken annually following the initial live class.
Signs & Symptoms of Illness/Infection Control (One combined live class for new employees; annual online refreshers of each separate subject $10 each)
This class focuses on how to recognize the signs and symptoms of illness in a person with developmental disabilities, including those who are nonverbal or whose verbal communication is unusual. We will discuss vital signs and how to interpret them, although we will not learn how to actually measure vital signs in this particular class. Specific body systems and their malfunction will also be discussed during the session. We cover some of the more common problems associated with developmental disabilities such as seizures in the neurological systems, swallowing disorders, and problems with bowel functioning. This class also incorporates education regarding practices of infection control including: Standard Precautions, handwashing techniques, safe food handling practices and laundry techniques.
American Red Cross First Aid
This class is for participants who need to obtain First Aid certification or re-certification. Participants will receive American Red Cross training, as well as specialized information for supporting persons with developmental disabilities. Upon successful class completion, participants will receive a three-year certificate. American Red Cross Infant/Child/Adult CPR
This class is for participants who require CPR Certification. Participants will be given the complete Red Cross course as well as information specialized to persons with developmental disabilities. Some of the training will include: Preventing disease transmission, Interventions for choking, Infant/Child/Adult CPR, Rescue Breathing, Shock, Heart Attacks and Strokes. Participants will receive a Red Cross CPR certificate that is valid for one year after completion. A CPR refresher class will be needed annually.
American Red Cross Infant/Child/Adult CPR Refresher
This is a class for those participants needing to update their skills and recertify their credentials. Only participants with valid certification or certification expired for no longer than 60 days, may attend this class. Participants will be given an abbreviated training according to Red Cross standards, as well as specialized information for supporting persons with developmental disabilities. Participants will receive a card designating one-year ongoing certification.
American Red Cross Infant/Child/Adult CPR and American Red Cross First Aid Combined
This class, offered quarterly, meets the requirements of both First Aid and CPR. It is for people who need certification in both at the same time.
Basic Gastrostomy Care
Gastrostomy is a surgical procedure for inserting a tube through the abdomen wall and into the stomach. The tube is used for infusing nutrition, fluids, medications or drainage. Gastrostomy is performed because a patient temporarily or permanently needs to be fed or administered medications directly through a tube in the stomach. This 3-hour class is designed to provide participants with a basic overview and understanding of Gastrostomy Tube use, nutrition and care. This course is a pre-requisite for individualized Gastrostomy Tube proficiency training. Minimum class size: 2 participants.
Nonviolent Crisis Intervention
Recertification (NVCI)
NVCI Recertification is a 3 hour class that reviews safety techniques to effectively manage disruptive or assaultive behaviors, fine tune skills to avoid/decrease escalation and power struggles, and also trains in consumer and self-protection techniques. Individuals certified in NVCI receive a one-year certificate from the Crisis Prevention Institute and annual recertification by way of this class is required annually.
Note: NVCI Recertification classes will be offered through July 2008, after which Imagine! will no longer routinely offer NVCI classes. Individuals or programs requiring additional NVCI training (including full certification, refreshers and re-certifications) beyond July can contact the instructor, Dave Boyer, directly at 303.819.2376.
Safety-Care™ Behavioral Safety Training
This is a 12-hour class completed over two consecutive days. Safety Care is a training developed to help staff working with clients who present behavioral challenges. This class teaches how to implement preventative strategies, functionally based treatment procedures, and when necessary, safety management (i.e. verbal and physical de-escalation skills). This is a state required training and requires annual recertification (1 day class).
Building Cooperative Behavior (Free)
participants will learn to recognize and understand principles of behavior, distinguish between proactive and reactive methods and draw upon the cooperative behavior building methods to strengthen positive behaviors. Foundations of Behavior Analysis
Foundations of Behavior Analysis is a 40-hour workshop that presents the natural science of behavior. Behavior analysis has evolved over the past eighty years to provide a systematic approach to understanding and describing behavior and its relationship to environmental determinants. Rigorous commitment to scientific methodology and experimental analysis by behavior analysts has produced Applied Behavior Analysis—a discipline in which the principles of behavior are directed toward the human condition and of significance to those individuals in its application. A philosophy of behavior has emerged that provides a thorough-going conceptualization of human and non-human behavior, and provides a framework for analyzing complex behaviors.
Benefits: One of the many benefits to understanding behavior analysis is the application of evidence-based procedures for the benefit of society and the relief of human suffering. Applied consistently, behavior analysis can be a powerful tool for effective and humane behavior change for individuals in many settings and for many situations.
Training Objectives:
- To provide a basic understanding of behavior in order to assess behavior, develop interventions, monitor effectiveness of interventions, and formulate strategies for extending results to other settings.
- To provide a foundation for discussing and reviewing theoretical and conceptual issues in behavior analysis, reviewing research in both experimental and applied literature, as well as both human and non-human research.
- To provide a methodology for interpreting and understanding all aspects of human behavior, rather than concentrating upon clinical settings.
Building Cooperative Behavior is a pre-requisite to this course. Seating is limited and attendance must be pre-arranged with Dr. Kupfer by email or by calling 303-604-5434. The next class is scheduled for October 27, 28, 29, November 3 and 4, 2008, from 8AM to 4:30PM each day. The class will be held in the Middle Conference Room of Imagine!'s Coal Creek Building.
